Pileated woodpecker at feeder

Wow – how fortunate to get a pileated woodpecker to your feeder! I had to chuckle at your comment of keeping away your red squirrel from this feeder – we have Douglas squirrels here (Olympic Peninsula, WA). I call our resident guy “Dougie” – and there’s nothing we have configured so far that prevents him/her from figuring it out to eventually “raid” whatever it is we hang. Of course, we truly don’t mind, we simply fill the bird feeders more often and have plenty of them for the birds to also feast on. We call it our “not so cheap” entertainment! Nice shot of this woodpecker, Laurie.

    • Thanks, Connie! Our red squirrels are also pretty good contortionists. Maybe someday I’ll get around to posting some of the funny photos I have of them doing major acrobatics to get at the bird feeder. We’ve resorted to a garbage can lid hung over top the feeder – not exactly esthetically pleasing but about the only way to keep the red squirrels out when they get too pushy. That said, we do enjoy their antics too so some days just let them have at it!
